Carpet Moss – Live Terrarium Moss (Hypnum cupressiforme)
Add lush greenery and natural texture to your terrariums with Carpet Moss (Hypnum cupressiforme), a beautiful live moss that forms soft, spreading mats across soil, rocks, and wood.
This versatile terrarium moss is perfect for creating miniature landscapes, covering soil in plant pots, or finishing kokedama moss balls. Its rich green colour and dense growth habit make it one of the most popular mosses used in terrariums and natural plant displays.
In nature, Carpet Moss grows across shaded woodland floors and tree trunks, forming thick carpets of moss in cool, humid environments. These same conditions make it especially well suited to closed terrariums and humid indoor plant displays.
The moss we supply arrives in natural mats that vary slightly in thickness and shape from tray to tray. However it arrives, Carpet Moss is resilient and can recover well from drying out with a good soak in water.
Because this moss is wild-collected from managed European woodlands, trays may occasionally contain small pieces of natural woodland debris such as pine needles, cones, twigs, or other plant material.
Scientific Name
Hypnum cupressiforme (cypress-shaped moss)
Common Names
Carpet Moss, Cypress-Leaved Moss, Hypnum Moss
Origin
Carpet Moss grows throughout much of the world, except Antarctica. The moss we supply is collected from sustainably managed European woodlands.
Why Use Carpet Moss in Terrariums?
• Creates a natural woodland look in terrariums and vivariums
• Adds colour and texture to miniature landscapes
• Helps retain moisture in humid environments
• Perfect for kokedama projects
• Ideal for topping plant pots or covering soil
Light
Carpet Moss prefers bright, indirect light or shaded conditions. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can dry the moss out.
Water
Keep the moss consistently moist. If it dries out, it can often be revived by soaking it thoroughly in water. Rainwater or filtered water is preferred where possible.
Humidity
High humidity is ideal, making this moss perfect for terrariums, bottle gardens, and humid plant displays.
Soil
When used in terrariums, we recommend a specialist terrarium substrate, typically containing materials such as coir, bark, sand and activated charcoal.
Food
None required – Carpet Moss naturally thrives in nutrient-poor environments.
Temperature
Carpet Moss grows well between 10–25°C and is hardy in the UK.
Pet-safe
Yes – although excessive nibbling isn’t recommended for pets, children, or the moss itself. As this moss may contain natural woodland debris such as pine needles, it may not be suitable for vivariums without cleaning first.
Important Information
This is living moss, not preserved moss.
A full tray roughly measures 28 × 38 cm and typically contains two to three layers of moss, covering an approximate surface area of around 0.3 m² (3000 cm²). As this is a natural product, thickness and coverage may vary between trays.
Moss Size Guide
The sizes listed refer to the approximate surface area the moss will cover, rather than individual clumps or sheets.
We always select the best pieces available when preparing smaller portions.
For example:
A pot with a 10 cm diameter will usually be well covered by the 10 × 10 cm moss size.
If you require a single piece of moss in a specific shape or size, please leave a note with your order and we will do our best to accommodate your request.
Full Moss Trays
Full trays are not always kept in stock and may occasionally need to be ordered from our supplier. Lead times are usually short, but this can sometimes add a few extra days to dispatch.
If you need a tray for a specific date, please add a note to your order or contact us before ordering to check availability.
