Philodendron ‘Plowmanii’ – Crawling Philodendron

Luxurious and sculptural, Philodendron ‘Plowmanii’ is a stunning species prized for its broad, rippled leaves with thick, textured stems. As it matures, each leaf develops deep pleats and prominent veins, giving it a dynamic, almost living quality. A slow but steady grower, ‘Plowmanii’ creeps along the surface rather than climbing, making it perfect for a floor planter or a wide, shallow pot where it can spread naturally. A collector’s favourite and a true statement piece.

Scientific Name
Philodendron plowmanii

(plowmanii = named in honour of botanist Timothy Plowman, renowned for his work on tropical plants)

Common Name
Crawling Philodendron, Plowman’s Philodendron

Origin
Native to the tropical rainforests of Ecuador and Peru, where it grows as a ground-crawling aroid beneath the forest canopy.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It will tolerate medium light, but brighter conditions (without harsh sun) will encourage larger, more textured leaves.

Water
Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow slightly more drying between waterings during cooler months.

Humidity
Loves high humidity (60–80% if possible). Mist regularly or use a pebble tray or humidifier to maintain lush, vibrant growth.

Soil
Use a rich, well-draining aroid mix – a blend of houseplant compost, orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir will mimic its natural environment beautifully.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Feeding promotes larger, healthier leaf growth. Pause feeding during winter dormancy.

Temperature
Ideal range is 18–26°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts.

Pet-safe
No – Philodendron species are toxic if ingested by pets and humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Support its creeping nature by giving it a wide pot with room to spread. Wipe the broad leaves gently to keep them free from dust and enjoy the beautiful texture and veining that make this Philodendron so special.
