Maranta leuconeura 'Silver Band' - Prayer Plant
A beautifully understated variety, Maranta leuconeura ‘Silver Band’ features soft green leaves with a distinctive silvery stripe running down the centre, paired with subtle veining that gives it a calm, elegant look. Like all Prayer Plants, its leaves gently move throughout the day, folding upwards at night, bringing a sense of life and movement to your space.
Scientific Name
Maranta leuconeura (‘white-veined Maranta’)
Common Name
Prayer Plant
Origin
Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, where it grows along the forest floor in warm, humid, shaded conditions.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate lower light, but patterns may fade and growth may slow. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
Water
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings, but never let it dry out completely. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity. Ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, or near a humidifier. Dry air can cause leaf edges to brown or curl.
Soil
Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive mix. A blend with coco coir, compost, and perlite works well to balance moisture and airflow.
Food
Feed every 2–3 waters during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold drafts.
Pet-safe
Non-toxic and safe for pets.
Sprouts Top Tips
If the leaves start to curl or develop crispy edges, it’s usually a sign the air is too dry – boost humidity to keep it looking its best.
Extras
Leaves may gently move throughout the day, responding to light levels – a natural behaviour known as nyctinasty.
Did You Know?
Prayer Plants raise their leaves in the evening as if in prayer, a movement controlled by changes in light and internal plant rhythms.
